Self-Care for Writers: Writing in the Cracks of Life
Search “writer aesthetic” on Pinterest or Instagram and you’ll find images of cozy fireplaces, cups of tea, and writers sitting in front of windows looking out over peaceful country vistas. The reality can be quite different – late nights, early mornings, less-than-adequate compensation, rejection, and squeezing writing between employment and family obligations.
The things we write about impact our writing lives, too. Exploring things that are emotionally challenging in our own pasts, in the world around us, or even in fictional worlds we’re creating, can take an emotional toll.

In this workshop, we’ll explore:

-
Creating a writing life with self-compassion and clarity
-
Coping with rejections and imposter syndrome
-
Creating a self-care plan

Trauma-Informed Writing Practices
Writing about difficult things we’ve experienced can be transformational. It can help reclaim our power and voice, make meaning of our experiences, and spark important conversations about mental health, disability, and society. But the process of engaging with difficult subject matter can be re-traumatizing, emotionally draining, and overwhelming. By adopting trauma-informed practices, writers can engage with their experiences in a way that supports healing rather than risking re-traumatization.
In this workshop, we’ll explore:
-
Trauma-informed practices to keep you grounded & safe while you're writing about difficult things
-
Embracing choice and control (establishing boundaries)
-
Finding your authentic voice
-
Developing support strategies

Changing the Narrative:
Reframing & Rewriting Our Own Stories
What stories do you tell yourself about your life? Where did those stories come from?
What if you changed the narrative and became the hero of your own story?
When you reframe your story with yourself as the hero, your perspective shifts. Power shifts.
This is an ideal workshop for memoir writers, or for anyone interested in exploring how the stories they believe about themselves influence their reality.
In this workshop, you will:

-
Reflect on stories in your life – what makes a story ‘true’? Who gets to decide?
-
Explore memory and the stories others have told you about your life
-
Learn to centre yourself in your own hero’s journey
